Frequently Asked Questions

  • a doula is a trained professional who provides physical, emotional and informational support to their client during pregnancy, throughout labour and birth, and immediate postpartum -- a doulas goal is to help their client achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.

  • Absolutely not! Any good doula will support you in whatever birth experience you are looking for. They will provide you with the information necessary so you have complete informed consent when making your decisions.

  • Studies have shown that when doulas attend births, labours are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily. Women who use doulas report having more positive feelings about their childbirth experience.

Studies have shown that having a doula's support can:

    - shorten labour by about 1.5 hours
    - decrease chance of cesarean birth by 51%
    - decrease the use for pain medication by 36%
    - reduce the need for pitocin by 71%
    - reduce the need for forceps by 57%
    - help partners participate with confidence
    - facilitate mother-baby bonding & breastfeeding

  • Most of the families I support have partners, but not all! A doulas job is not just to support the birthing person, but also the partner as well (there are two people welcoming a baby here and it's a big deal for both). My clients have actually found that with my support, their partner actually end up being more involved and confident supporting!

  • You can hire a doula anytime throughout your pregnancy! I find, the earlier the better -- that way you have the opportunity to build your relationship and deepen trust.
